NelSound 2004

After the event being delayed twice it was all go for the first NelSound on Saturday 22 May run by Retravision Stoke TV and Radio. The weather didn’t look the best in the morning but thanks to the wind, as the morning turned into afternoon, the clouds disappeared and the sun came out shining ready for a great event. Competitors came from all parts of the South Island; Blenheim, Christchurch, Ashburton, and with the local support of the Nelson cars a great turnout was achieved.

After a bit of mingling and getting all the competitors sorted into there classes, it was time to start the cars rolling in one by one. Street A was first up with 6 Competitors. Mike took away Street A with a score of 141.46, the rest of the places were closely fought between the other cars with scores between 133 and 135. The final results for Basic Street were:

BASIC STREET CLASS
1st - Michael King - 141.46dB @ 59Hz
2nd - John Selwood - 135.88dB @ 54Hz
3rd - Matt Smith - 133.53dB @ 56Hz
4th - Mike Rutherford - 133.47dB @ 47Hz
5th - Lisa Fisher - 130.16dB @ 62Hz
6th - John Fullerton - 125.60dB @ 49Hz

Advanced Street saw the biggest number of cars entering and after every one was given a chance to do a sign sweep to get there best frequency, it was all go. There was an array of different setups, with single sub setups and dual 12” subs being the most popular. The results between first and second were very close but Karl managed to squeeze out Thomas the local to finish first place. Not a bad effort for subs that were new and a box that was only completed late Thursday night. I’m sure Thomas will be doing a bit of work to get that little extra out of his PBX sub, push it to its limits and come back to hit larger numbers. The results for Advanced Street are:

ADVANCED STREET CLASS
1st - Karl Straver - 141.06dB @ 54Hz
2nd - Thomas Tutahione - 140.39dB @ 44Hz
3rd - Royce Smith - 138.12dB @ 51Hz
4th - Dave Trainor - 132.99dB @ 38Hz
5th - Chris Elenor - 131.26dB @ 64Hz
6th - Luke King - 130.90dB @ 56Hz
7th - Chris Haskett - 127.81dB @ 57Hz
8th - Nic Eden - 127.73dB @ 57Hz

Super Street was the smallest of the 3 classes with only 2 cars turning up. Shane with his DD9515 was a clear winner on the day and took out over all best score for the day as well with a massive 147.55.

SUPER STREET
1st - Shane Michael - 147.55dB @ 54Hz
2nd - James Wilkinson - 138.07dB @ 43Hz

The Best Install prize went to Mike (mikeynz) with his Toyota corolla FX-GT

Overall it was a great day and well run, one of the best events I have been to with great prizes as well. The crowd was always hanging around and interested in the cars and sounds alike. The event closed off with a prize giving for the winners and some pizza afterwards.

Big thanks go to the organizers and all the sponsors that donated prizes and gear to help get the event running:

  • Stephen (Erkel) from E-Audio
  • Andrew from Installer Services
  • Grant from Digital Logistics
  • All the Team at Stoke TV and Radio especially Daniel for making the event happen

Stay tuned and get ready for NelSound 2, coming to Nelson in 2005
